This position assists in leading all safety efforts in our Jackson, TN location This role must deliver a culture towards our journey of zero injuries and illnesses, & minimizes the risk of adversely impacting the communities where we live and work. This position provides leadership and technical expertise to all levels of the organization and helps to ensure compliance with all safety policies and regulations in concert with the organization’s business and financial goals.

 

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Leads programs for compliance with safety regulations and requirements
  • Technical expert, having an understanding of all relevant safety issues.
  • Provides compliance specifications/recommendations to Engineering, Procurement, Human Resources, Food Safety & Quality and Maintenance functions.
  • Assist in leading the facility’s EHS assessment process, ensuring any material findings are corrected and any systemic causes are addressed and, if appropriate, the learnings are shared across the organization. Ensures accurate and timely safety recordkeeping and document management including the submission of periodic reports to regulatory agencies.
  • Leads and/or assists with emergency response activities.
  • Interface with regulatory and public sector safety authorities as appropriate
  • Help manage Process Safety Management program for ammonia refrigeration as appropriate.
  • Participate in Process Safety Audits, PHA’s and other elements of Process Safety Management integral to sites’ safety performance
  • Oversee sites industrial hygiene programs, operational safety management
  • Develop, review, and revise site safety plan in collaboration with site leadership team.
  • Prioritize major hazards and risks across the site, and ensure actions are taken to mitigate or eliminate risks.
  • Lead incident investigations for safety and environmental incidents and participate in management review of all serious incidents.
  • Lead, coordinate, and participate in safety performance improvement initiatives
  • Lead, support, and guide safety committees.
  • Participate in annual budget development process
  • Drive greater cost reduction opportunities in the safety, health and workers’ compensation functions, moving beyond a compliance mindset.
  • Bring a best practice mindset and be able to provide specific solutions to assist the individual manufacturing site by leveraging the resources and scale of the corporation. 
  • Assist senior management to continually assess the talent within the organization to capitalize on strengths and identify areas of needs. Coach, encourage, retain and recruit talent.
  • Track, report, and analyze safety performance and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Leads the development, review, and revision of safety training programs; facilitates train-the-trainer sessions; directs computer-based training activities.
  • Help manage sites’ security programs and systems.
  • Work with Sites’ Engineering & Maintenance Resources to resolve issues identified during Loss Prevention/Risk Management inspections.

Qualifications

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Ten years’ experience in health and safety field
  • Experience managing a Process Safety Management Program 
  • Managing budgets
  • Sustainability improvement leadership
  • Experience in food processing, or other FDA regulated industries, would be a plus but is not required.
  • A proven ability to effectively lead and manage in a complex, multi-faceted, and matrixed role.
  • Workers Compensation experience preferred
  • Environmental Compliance experience preferred
  • Must be knowledgeable of safety regulations and standards including but not limited to: OSHA, ANSI, NIOSH  
  • Should possess strong leadership, training, problem solving, and decision making skills
  • Should have strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational, research and analytical skills.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, and ANSI Z10 protocols. 

 

EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Environmental or Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, or other related degree required.  
    • Master’s degree in Safety Management, Environmental or Occupational Health and Safety, or other related degree, preferred.
  • Holds or is working toward appropriate professional designation, i.e. Certified Safety Professional - CSP

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees a staff including Workers Compensation Specialist and Safety Supervisor.

 

TRAVEL:

Approximate 20% of annual travel
